Friendly Caller

About Me

I am a highschool student living in the GTA, that has been self-isolated along with my fellow peers. However, hearing the news about seniors in Ontario, and their struggle with social-distancing and Covid-19, sparked the inspiration to help those seniors who would be going through a difficult time. I started this charitable program called The Friendly Caller, to help seniors who are feeling lonely and scared during this challenging time, by providing methods of socialization while adhering to the protocols of social distancing.

Getting started

For the first step, I decided to contact a number of retirement homes in the GTA to see if there was any interest in this program, and if they would be willing to participate. I received positive feedback from a number of homes, as well as new suggestions, such as designing uplifting posters. After a few homes expressed their interest, I decided to recruit volunteers from my highschool to design posters, and to participate in the caller program.

To date, I am currently collaborating with four retirement homes with posters, of which two will also be participating in the caller program. My goal is to be able to provide support for an additional ten retirement homes by June 2020.

My Work

Posters

The posters are designed with both words and visuals, to help motivate seniors, and keep them thinking positively during these times. The messages on the posters include quotes from famous scholars and historical figures (Plato, Oscar Wilde, etc.). The visuals have been carefully designed to strengthen the messages.

Caller Program

The caller program pairs volunteers with seniors living in retirement homes facing self-isolation, for one on one weekly phone conversations. Volunteers are largely high school students looking to give back to the community. Research has shown that seniors who stay socially connected have experienced an improvement in their health as well as better intellectual stimulation and cognition and reduced emotional & physical pain. In order to help seniors keep their health up while following social distancing, this program offers a fun alternative for seniors looking for some company during this isolating time.

Confidentiality Agreement

It is understood and agreed to that the below identified disclosure of confidential information may provide certain information that is and must be kept confidential. To ensure the protection of such information, and to preserve any confidentiality necessary under patent and/or trade secret laws, it is agreed that

1. The Confidential Information to be disclosed can be described as and includes: Personal information regarding the senior(s) participating in the caller program, personal information regarding the volunteers.
2. The Recipient shall limit disclosure of Confidential Information within its own organization to its directors, officers, partners, members, employees and/or independent contractors (collectively referred to as “affiliates”) having a need to know. The Recipient and affiliates will not disclose the confidential information obtained from the disclosure unless required to do so by law.
3. This Agreement imposes no obligation upon Recipient with respect to any Confidential Information (a) that was in Recipient’s possession before receipt from Disclosure; (b) is or becomes a matter of public knowledge through no fault of Recipient; (c) is rightfully received by Recipient from a third party not owing a duty of confidentiality to the Disclosure; (d) is disclosed without a duty of confidentiality to a third party by, or with the authorization of, Discloser; or (e) is independently derived by Recipient.
4. This Agreement states the entire agreement between the parties concerning the disclosure of Confidential Information. Any addition or modification to this Agreement must be made in writing and signed by the parties.
5. If any of the provisions of this Agreement are found to be unenforceable, the remainder shall be enforced as fully as possible and the unenforceable provision(s) shall be deemed modified to the limited extent required to permit enforcement of the Agreement as a whole. WHEREFORE, the parties acknowledge that they have read and understand this Agreement and voluntarily accept the duties and obligations set forth herein.
